A little bit of this and that

My January Least Favourite

28 January 2014
Well hello there!

It's the 28th of January (sorry, what? I swear it was just Christmas) and the first month of 2014 is coming to a close. January isn't exactly the most joyful of months - rain, grey skies, wet feet and yet more rain, woohoo!

Nothing too exciting has really been happening the past month and whilst many other bloggers out there are bringing you their January favourites, I've decided to take a little spin on this and proudly present you with....

My January LEAST favourite
(doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, sorry about that)

Now it is no secret that my least favourite of this month is something that I pretty much despise all year round, but this month in particular has taken my hatred to a whole new level.

Recognise these bad boys? If so, you are probably aware of the hell that seems to be a condition of purchasing one of these little orange beauties. Not got a clue what I'm talking about? Then sit back, grab a cup of tea, get comfy and enjoy!

First of all, I'd like to establish that I use trains every day to get to and from university; yes, I can drive but ain't nobody got time to drive around for a good 15 minutes trying to find a parking space during rush hour and then spend a fortune to stay there for the day. Trains are useful, yes, but they're also quite a pain; here's a rundown of my top 3 train related problems of this month.

1. They have a tendency to be late/cancelled without any word of warning
Rush hour trains are THE worst - if you want to get anywhere on time you better reschedule - got a 9am exam that you can't be late for? Too bad, cause we're going to cancel your train at 5 minutes notice. This has happened to me on countless occasions, the number of times I've had to sprint from the train station to my university with a beaming purple face has become an embarrassingly frequent occurrence.

2. "Sorry, how much?!"
Yup, you've guessed it, the prices are extortionate, and this month they rose further, much to my delight. In all honesty though, as a student, money is tight enough as it is and not all of us are fortunate enough to have part time jobs, so forking out £65+ a month to make a 10 minute journey is a pretty hefty chunk out of our rapidly depleting bank balances, sad face :(

3. I'm pretty positive your bag didn't pay for that seat
If you frequent rush hour trains, you'll be aware that getting on the train and finding a seat for yourself is war - it really is every man for himself. If you've ever been to the January sales, this pretty much mirrors how some people will act when getting on the train - downright crazy. If you are an unfortunate soul who doesn't manage to grab a seat in time and find yourself questioning why exactly you paid a small fortune for a ticket that now entitles you to a nice, swaying, acrobatic performance to keep yourself from falling, bumps and bruises from other commuters and the cold winter breeze creeping in every time someone gets off the station, prepare yourself. There is probably someone who has given their bag a nice seat - these are the worst type of train people. I am 100% certain that you didn't pay a fare for your bag because that's what the overhead storage is for - approach these people with caution, be polite and cheery; they're probably going to throw you some death stares and grunt and groan as they move their bag to make way for you but alas, victory! 99% of commuters on early morning trains want nothing to do with one another, keep all human contact to an absolute minimum and only make eye contact if necessary, they all look a bit grumpy but hey, it's 8am, we aren't all exactly at our best. At the end of the day, the people on the trains will irritate you but once you've claimed a seat as your own, you've made your own little victory in itself.

So there you have it, in all its crazy, expensive joy - my January least favourite. I understand this has been one massive rant/moan but hey, think of it as me giving you a little street knowledge and an insight into a day in my life, that's what this whole blogging thing is about anyway, isn't it?

Until next time!
